Subtitle Generator FAQ
Common questions about how the EditCrafted Subtitle Generator works, what it supports, and how to use the result.
The basics
What file types can I upload?
MP4 video and MP3, WAV, and M4A audio. If your source is in a different format, convert it with the EditCrafted Media Converter first, then upload the result.
What is an SRT file?
SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is a plain-text subtitle format with timestamps. Each entry has a start time, an end time, and the line of text shown on screen. Read our full SRT explainer.
Does the tool support both audio and video files?
Yes. For a video the audio track is read out and transcribed. For an audio file the same speech-recognition step runs directly on the audio.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes — the maximum upload size is 100 MB per file. If your file is larger, trim or compress it first, or re-encode it at a lower bitrate with the Media Converter.
How long does generation take?
Most files take seconds to a few minutes, depending on file length and current server load. Short clips of one to two minutes typically finish very quickly.
Using the result
Can I use the subtitles on YouTube?
Yes. In YouTube Studio: Subtitles → Add →
Upload file → With timing, then pick the
.srt. See the
YouTube subtitle guide
for the full walkthrough.
Can I use them on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or Shorts?
Those platforms don't ship a separate subtitle track on
short-form video. Most creators burn captions directly into
the video instead. For that workflow use
Captions AI; the
tool on this site is best for traditional sidecar
.srt files.
Can I import the SRT into a video editor?
Yes. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, and most other modern editors have a Captions or Subtitles panel with an Import SRT option. The lines appear on the timeline and can be restyled, retimed, or burned into your export.
Can I edit subtitles after downloading?
Absolutely. An .srt file is plain text. Open it
in any text or code editor, or edit it inside your video
editor's subtitle panel. We recommend reviewing the file once
before publishing.
How accurate are the subtitles?
Accuracy depends on audio quality, accent, background noise, and specialized vocabulary. Clean studio recordings get very good results. For publishable work we always recommend a quick read-through and correction of proper nouns and brand names.
Languages
What languages are supported?
The UI currently exposes English, Hebrew, and auto-detect. Auto-detect works for a range of other languages with clearly recorded speech, but for production work we suggest picking a specific language when you know it in advance.
Should I use auto-detect or pick a language?
If your audio is clean and clearly in one language, picking the language explicitly usually gives the best result. Auto-detect is a good fallback when you're not sure or when the file mixes short greetings in another language.
Privacy and security
Are uploaded files deleted after processing?
Yes. Once your .srt is returned to your browser,
our backend automatically deletes both the uploaded source
file and the generated subtitle file. We don't keep a
user-facing copy of your media.
Is it safe to upload sensitive recordings?
We don't recommend it. Anything uploaded over the internet leaves your device, so highly sensitive material (legal, medical, confidential business meetings) should generally not be sent to any online tool, including this one. For everyday creator workflows it is well-suited.
Do I need an account?
No. The subtitle generator is free to use without signing up.
We don't ask for an email or any personal information to
produce your .srt.
Where can I read the full privacy policy?
On the Privacy Policy page. It covers cookies, analytics, advertising, and how uploaded files are handled.
Other
Why should I add subtitles to my videos?
Most social-video views happen on mute, captioned videos are more accessible, and platforms tend to recommend them more often because they hold attention longer. See Why subtitles improve video accessibility for the full picture.
